Honey Production in México

According to USDA and FAO figures, up to 1991 México harvested more than 60,000 tons of honey annually and occupied fourth place worldwide as producer, only after Russia, China, and the U.S.A., in spite of systematically falling production. In 1992, when Russia was restructured,México was ranked temporarily in 3rd. place. In 1995, in spite of diminished production,which only reached 38,000 tons., USDA estimate, México was ranked 9th., in worldwide honey production,surpassed not only by China and the U.S.A., but also by Argentina, Russia and four other countries, Turkey, India, Belarusia and Ucrania. It is important to notice that if you look at the official Mexican production figures (SAGAR) in 1995 honey production was 50,000tons, and México returned to 4th. place, after China, the United States and Argentina. Other important producers and exporters are Cánada and Germany. So, the seven most important producers worldwide, excepting Russia who actively participates in global exchanges ,together represented nearly 46% of total worldwide production, estimated at 1.1 million tons during 1995.

Other outstanding front-runners who do not export, or do it only marginally, are: Turkey with a production of 60,000 tons in 1994, India , 51,000 tons, Belarusia 50,000 tons, Australia 23,000 tons, and Brazil 20,000 tons. These nine countries together, represented nearly 30% of total worldwide production in 1994

Nearly 37% of Mexican honey production, is concentrated in five states of the Southeast: Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatán. The last one, being the national leader with more than 8 thousand tons during 1994. Other front-runners are . Jalisco 6,300 tons, Guerrero 4,600 tons, Veracruz 3,900 tons, Oaxaca 2,500 tons,Puebla 2,350 tons. Other outstanding States with over 1,000 tons each one of them are: Colima, Guanajuato,Hidalgo, Michoacan, Morelos, San Luis Potosí, Sinaloa and Zacatecas. Together these 17 states represent nearly 90% of the national production.

During 1994 and 1995 the estimated national production per hive was 25kg. This is a small figure compared to other countries, Like the U.S.A. or Argentina which reach a production of more than 30 kg., or Canadá and Australia with figures of over 60 kg. The five outstanding Mexican states, for their production in 1994 are : Baja California, Aguascalientes, Tlaxcala, Guerreo and Campeche. These , do not compare unfavorably with the above mentioned countries. In 1995 the following states were ranked higher than the national average: Guerrero, Tamaulipas, Chiapas, Tabasco and Hidalgo.

Gross production(average 41% during four years 1991-94) is carried out during the last three months of each year . During April, May and June, 32% is obtained. However in most of the country honey is produced, exported, consumed and commercialized during the entire year.

Due to the fact that a great part of production (an average of 58%during 1991 to 1995)
has as a final destination the export market and there are few imports( less than an average of 17 tons in that period) domestic consumption is practically equivalent to the annual production not exported. In 1995, this figure was nearly 25,000 tons, and considering a population of 92.7 million, according to the National Population Census figures, the per Capita consumption for that year was 267 grs. after reaching 300grs. during 1992 and 1993. On the international level these figures are very modest, because some countries consume over a kilo per capita. For this reason the internal market is considered to have a great potential, given expexted increases in average income, and necessary efforts are underway to promote the product.

According to National Information Market Services, during May and July, the price of wholesale unprocessed honey, in the Republic of México, oscillated between $10.00 (Mex. pesos) per kilo for clear Ambar Mesquite BCN and $18.00 (Mex. pesos) per kilo for clear amber multiflower, Colima,depending on flower blossom and origin.

Honey Exportation

In 1995, México was in 3rd. place world wide as a exporter, after China, and Argentina. México exports regularly to Germany, United Kingdom, and the United States and jointly receive more than 90% of total Mexican export. Also during 1995, but in lesser quantity, it has been exported to Switzerland, Bel/Lux, being to export to Saudia Arabia which becomes in 1995 and first trimester of 1996, the 4th market destination and modest quantities to non-traditional markets such as: Guatemala and Venezuela.

Following the same pattern of decreasing production, the exportation has dropped to half of what it was in 1991 (from more than 50,000 tons in that year to only 25.7 thousand tons in 1995) On the average there had been over 35.7 thousand tons annualy exported. During the five years 1991-95 with an Fob average value of 1,007 dls/ton during 1995, the lowest volume was register in the last two decades, with an average value of 1,187 dls/ton. (the highest in the last years).

Until 1993, México was the principal supplier in the German market butt in 1994, with 24% they no longer had first place as supplier, it was exceeded by Argentina which represented 27% of the market. China, Uruguay, Hungry and Cuba, are other important suppliers to the principal buyers of the world. Germany is also an important exporter and re-exporter. Careful analysis of  German statistics of external commerce, says that part of the purchases from México, are processed there, and sent to other important markets of the world. México, almost always sells honey to suit individual requirements, classified by color although not always by bee forage and the negative consequence is a relatively low price for producers. The participation of México in the U.S.A. market has suffered highs and lows, such as in 1990 it had 21% of the market and by 1994 they only supply 6% of the total, being China, Argentina and Canada who represented almost the totality of the rest of the North America acquisitions in these last two years.This drop in the Mexican sales to the U.S.A. is given just in the first two  years of validation of the TLCAN(North American free trade commerce)when the customs tax fee was suppressed for México.

In 1989 México had the maximum penetration(1%) in the Japanese market. From then on, the participation is insignificant (between 0.1% and 0.2% of the total). China, the giant supplier (almost 90% in 1994 and 1995) with a good participation from Argentina (close to 5%) and a small participation from Canada.
